A program that aims to provide disadvantaged students with an equitable chance at the future they envision.
People from disadvantaged backgrounds can be so grateful for what they get that they don’t know how to ask for anything more. I didn’t understand that I could argue for extra points on a test. I didn’t realize that I could ask for help.

What Is GOC?

Generation of Change (GOC) is a mentorship program that provides students with an equitable chance at the future they envision. Through a one-year long mentor-mentee relationship, students will be given a support system to aid the mentee in their future endeavors. It is then through the maintenance of this relationship that we hope to provide the resources to lead students to higher education, and recognize their potential for success.

How Does It Work?

Active VOE Members (mentee) will be matched with VOE alumni (mentor) to create a one year long mentor-mentee relationship. This relationship will last from the mentees Spring semester Junior year until their fall semester Senior year. These mentors will be responsible for guiding their mentee through the higher educational process or other pathways. Serving as a support system, and continued resource. The long-term goal is to create lasting relationships that the mentee can touch base with even post-grad.

What Are The Benefits?

Outside of a long-term mentor-mentee relationship, mentees will be connected to a network of mentors from different backgrounds and universities across the nation. Students will also attend bi-monthly lectures which present a variety of topics such as professional development–LinkedIn, resume building, the essence of professionalism; the higher education application cycle; and imposter syndrome and self-advocacy.

Why Does This Program Target Disadvantaged Students?

There are numerous studies that prove mentorship is a vital component in an individual’s advancement. However, despite this, many underrepresented populations lack this guidance, even in its most natural form—through a knowledgeable parent or guardian. This could be due to socioeconomic or other issues, but all effect the individual’s perception of their worth, and future. This is the community we hope to reach through this program.

What Is College Like?

This varies from school-to-school, so there is no definitive answer. However, through the provided network of mentors, our mentees will be able to find the answer they are looking for.

How Much Will College Cost?

The price of college depends on a number of factors such as location, individual need, type of school, etc.
